A small tribute to a dear friend no longer with us........

Carilynn O'Hare aka Joan Troy

By Diana Balhaus

Not always we are blessed to cross paths with unforgettable people, Cari was all that.

In the vast digital world of Second Life, we meet avatars with many faces, styles, and stories. But every once in a while, someone comes along whose presence goes far beyond pixels — someone who radiates warmth, humor, and kindness. Carilynn O’Hare was one of those rare souls.

Carilynn wasn't just a model in the Second Life fashion scene — she was a friend, a confidante, and a true light for everyone who crossed her path. Known for her generosity, quick wit, and unmistakable charm, she brought heart to everything she did, from the way she walked the runway to how she cheered on those around her behind the scenes.

She had that rare gift of making you feel like the most important person in the room — even if that “room” was a laggy event sim with 47 avatars and a DJ playing glitchy techno. She was always there with a joke, a compliment, or just a quiet presence that reminded you: you’re not alone in this crazy, virtual world.  Her kindness wasn’t performative — it was consistent, real, and deeply felt. Whether she was mentoring new models, helping a designer troubleshoot an outfit, or simply lending an ear, Carilynn gave — of her time, her heart, and her humor.

In fashion, Carilynn walked with style, confidence, and a little wink of mischief. She had a flair for elegance, but never took herself too seriously. She knew that fashion in SL was both art and play — and she embraced both sides beautifully.  Peers remember her not just as a professional, but as the person backstage calming nerves, making people laugh, and reminding everyone why we do this in the first place: for the joy of creativity and community.

Unfortunately, she passed away a few years ago after a battle with cancer, but her spirit continues to ripple through the community she helped build. Those who knew her carry pieces of her in memories, in photos, in shared laughter. And even those who didn’t know her personally likely felt the warmth of her presence somewhere — in a group message, a modeling event, a friend’s story about "that one time Carilynn..."

Losing someone like her reminds us that virtual worlds are real worlds, too — because the connections we make here are deeply human. And Carilynn was one of the most beautifully human avatars to ever grace the grid.  Wherever we go in Second Life — whether backstage at a show or wandering a quiet sim at sunset — some of us will still hear her voice, feel her support, remember her smile and the wicked phrase, with heavy American accent of course "Mandala P'atra" (send her back).

Because the people who give love, laughter, and light never really leave us.

And Carilynn O’Hare gave us all three, in abundance.
